Final Fantasy fans are circulating theories about a potential remake of Dirge of Cerberus after Gackt, the Japanese rockstar who voiced Genesis Rhapsodos in Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus, shared a photo of himself in a Genesis cosplay. Gackt was instrumental in the creation and design of the character, who first appeared nearly two decades ago.
While Gackt reprised his role for the Crisis Core remake in 2022, his recent social media activity has reignited speculation. On August 6, 2026, Gackt posted an Instagram reel featuring himself in a Genesis costume, with his song "Redemption" playing in the background. "Redemption" served as the official theme song for Dirge of Cerberus. This has led to widespread fan speculation regarding news of a remake for the Vincent Valentine-centric game.
Dirge of Cerberus is one of the few Final Fantasy VII spin-off titles yet to receive a remake. Despite its place in the FF7 universe, its gameplay and control scheme are often cited as dated, making a remake an appealing prospect for many fans.
Some fans have pointed to a pattern in Gackt's social media posts that mirrors his activity prior to the Crisis Core remake announcement. According to a post by user 'nibelbound' on X, Gackt mentioned returning to a studio he hadn't visited in "over ten years" for voice recordings just four days before the Crisis Core remake was revealed at Summer Game Fest 2022.
Beyond a remake, fans are also speculating that Genesis could appear in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which is slated for a showing at Gamescom 2026. Naoki Hamaguchi, director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, has previously indicated a desire to integrate all Final Fantasy VII spin-offs into the game's narrative. In an interview with YouTuber Ashif’s Release Notes at Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival Berlin 2026, Hamaguchi stated, "There are a lot of other titles within the VII universe. So, we're talking about Advent Children, we're talking about Dirge of Cerberus, Crisis Core. And we want to bring all of those in and make sure we're not leaving those out."
With Dirge of Cerberus's story being explored in Ever Crisis and subtle references appearing in Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, the possibility of both the game and the character of Genesis receiving a long-awaited return seems increasingly likely.
