Remy LeBeau, known to X-Men fans for decades as Gambit, has adopted a new codename: Wyvern. This dramatic shift occurred during a recent storyline in Marvel's Uncanny X-Men series, specifically within issue #32, as the mutant faced an onslaught from an alien force.
The change in identity is directly linked to a terrifying transformation Gambit underwent. Initially, the mutant manifested draconic wings and a tail, a physical manifestation of a curse tied to a stolen artifact. This transformation escalated until Remy appeared almost entirely as a dragon, speaking in a frenzied, monstrous state. The new codename, Wyvern, reflects this draconic and beastly appearance.
This transformation is rooted in events stemming from Uncanny X-Men #1, where Gambit stole the Left Eye of Agamotto from a dragon named Sadurang. The dragon had warned Gambit of a future price for this theft, foretelling a descent into madness and a monstrous, cannibalistic state. Issue #32 seemingly brought this prophecy to fruition.
Following the defeat of the alien invaders, Gambit's partner Rogue decided they needed to leave the main group to seek assistance for Remy's condition. Gambit himself indicated the need for an exorcist, setting the stage for the introduction of a new character called Repent, also dubbed "The X-orcist." Promotional materials describe Repent as wielding light constructs and fitting a religious, demonic-exorcist motif, with his mission stated as freeing an X-Man from what he perceives as "homicidal possession."
Given the introduction of Repent and his stated purpose, it appears the Wyvern persona, and the draconic curse, may be temporary. The exact nature of Repent—whether friend or foe, or even a mutant—remains to be seen.
Separately, Gambit is slated to appear in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday, with Channing Tatum reprising the role. However, this cinematic iteration of the character is unlikely to undergo the drastic changes seen in the comics, as his MCU journey is just beginning.
