Pokémon developer Game Freak is venturing into the action-RPG genre with Beast of Reincarnation, a title that marries fast-paced combat with a distinctive tactical twist. Based on an early hands-on preview of the game's opening hours, the studio appears to be successfully transitioning its development focus from creature collection to intense, post-apocalyptic combat.

The game introduces players to Emma, a swordmaster, and her canine companion Koo, who offers magical support. The core combat loop involves Emma executing rapid sword combos and parries, while Koo provides assistance through special abilities. A key mechanic allows players to briefly slow down time, enabling tactical selection of up to six of Koo's abilities. These range from offensive spells like fireballs to crowd control options such as root bindings that immobilize enemies, creating openings for Emma. Successfully parrying enemy attacks with Emma's sword is crucial, as it generates the 'fluorescence points' required to activate Koo's abilities. The game's difficulty is also adjustable, allowing players to tailor the experience.

Koo's abilities also provide benefits for Emma, with successful attacks recovering health. Quick-time events that accompany Koo's special moves can further replenish Emma's health, with more elaborate sequences expected as the game progresses.

While not an open world, Beast of Reincarnation features expansive sandbox-like quarantine zones filled with secrets, diverse enemies, and unique boss encounters known as 'Nushi'. Traversal is enhanced by Emma's unique hair abilities, which can form vines for grappling or create temporary platforms and stilts for reaching new areas or gaining tactical advantages for stealth attacks. Koo also plays a role outside of combat, alerting Emma to nearby threats and locating item caches, some of which may require environmental puzzle-solving.

The narrative delves into the backstory of Emma and Koo's bond through playable flashback sequences, offering insights into the post-apocalyptic world. These sections also provide opportunities to hone Emma's swordplay skills when Koo is unavailable.

Beast of Reincarnation is scheduled for release on August 4 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The preview suggests that beyond the flashy combat and exploration, the game incorporates deeper systems such as skill trees, crafting, and cooking.
