Game Freak, the studio primarily known for its work on the Pokémon franchise, is preparing to release a new non-Pokémon title next week. Titled "Beast of Reincarnation," the action game was initially revealed as Project Bloom in 2023 and is scheduled for launch on August 4 for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. Fiction, Inc., a studio that emerged from the remnants of Private Division, will publish the game.
Director Kota Furushima has described "Beast of Reincarnation" as "bold and tonally different from our prior work." The game is set in the year 4026 and follows the journey of Emma the Sealer and her canine companion, Koo, as they navigate a desolate, post-apocalyptic wasteland that was once Japan. Their mission involves confronting and defeating corrupted monsters.
The game's art direction evokes a world reminiscent of Studio Ghibli's "Princess Mononoke," with early concept art by Kazuma Koda, known for his work on "Nier: Automata," hinting at this tonal shift. Recent trailers have showcased the game's visuals, depicting a stark, blighted environment.
In terms of gameplay, "Beast of Reincarnation" leans into action-focused combat, featuring mechanics such as parries and special abilities known as Blooming Arts. These abilities can momentarily slow down the action, allowing players to strategize their next moves. This combat system represents a significant departure from the turn-based battles typical of the Pokémon series.
Character progression in "Beast of Reincarnation" is handled through a skill tree, enabling players to customize both Emma and Koo as they progress through the game. This customization aims to equip the duo with the necessary abilities to survive the harsh environments they will face.
"Beast of Reincarnation" marks a significant undertaking for Game Freak, potentially standing as one of the summer's key releases and a notable entry in the developer's history due to its ambitious tone and departure from its established franchise.
