Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, the real-time strategy game set in the popular fantasy universe, has been delayed and is now slated for an early 2027 release. The game was initially expected to launch this year.
Developer PlaySide announced the revised schedule in a Steam blog post, stating that the delay is necessary to meet the team's quality standards and satisfy both real-time strategy enthusiasts and Game of Thrones fans. "War for Westeros will now launch in early 2027," the studio confirmed. "We remain unwavering in our mission to deliver a real-time strategy game set in the world of Westeros that meets the expectations of both RTS players and Game of Thrones fans. This decision gives us the time needed to continue building towards that goal and ensure that the game reaches the high level of quality we are aiming for."
Accompanying the announcement were brief gameplay clips showcasing various factions, hero abilities, cavalry units, and expansive maps. The visuals suggest an experience akin to the Total War series, but with the distinct flavor of Westeros.
Despite the enduring popularity of the Game of Thrones franchise, its video game adaptations have seen limited success. While Telltale's narrative game and Reigns: Game of Thrones offered notable experiences, the series has largely been confined to mobile titles. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is reportedly looking to elevate Game of Thrones as a key franchise, and War for Westeros is expected to arrive as part of this renewed focus, though potentially before other major projects materialize. The delay, while disappointing for those anticipating the game, also served as a reminder of its existence and its eventual arrival on Windows PC.
