Developer Playside has revealed new gameplay details for Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, a real-time strategy game set to release in the near future. Originally announced in 2025 with a planned 2026 launch, the title will feature major Houses such as Lannister, Stark, and Targaryen, alongside the forces of the Night King. Players will command armies in an effort to conquer the Seven Kingdoms.
Hero units are expected to be a significant component of War for Westeros' real-time strategy mechanics. Characters like Tywin Lannister and Jon Snow will possess unique abilities designed to influence the course of battles. Daenerys Targaryen will have access to a dragon, which appears poised to be a powerful asset.
The game will offer players the opportunity to rewrite established Game of Thrones history. A trailer showcased scenarios such as Robb Stark defeating Jaime Lannister and a potential ending where the White Walkers emerge victorious, with the Night King claiming the Iron Throne.
Designed with a nod to classic real-time strategy titles, War for Westeros will include both a single-player campaign and multiplayer modes. This release arrives as the real-time strategy genre sees a resurgence, with titles like Age of Empires 4, Age of Mythology: Retold, and Homeworld 3 achieving popularity, and upcoming games such as Stronghold 4 and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 indicating continued interest in the genre.
