Gamescom, the European video gaming trade show that relocated to Cologne's Koelnmesse in 2009, has solidified its position as the largest gaming event globally, particularly following the cessation of E3. This expanded international attention has not altered the event's long-term development strategy, according to its directors.
Tim Endres, director of Gamescom at Koelnmesse, stated that the event's continuous growth in scale, international relevance, and digital reach is a result of sustained development. He highlighted the consistent annual occurrence, the expansion of its hybrid model, and the creation of formats like Gamescom Opening Night Live and the Gamescom Awesome Indies Show, alongside international editions such as Gamescom Asia and Gamescom LATAM. "With E3 no longer taking place, Gamescom has naturally taken on a larger share of the global spotlight," Endres noted, adding that this visibility brings excitement rather than pressure. "We are happy and excited to see more people from around the world looking at Gamescom."
Stefan Heikhaus, director of Gamescom at the German Games Industry Association, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing a strong responsibility to the community and industry. "It's more a level of excitement, not pressure," he explained. The focus remains on incorporating feedback from attendees, exhibitors, and partners. For the 2026 iteration, plans include closer integration of the developer conference, further development of the indie showcase, the addition of Games Done Quick, and an enhanced focus on community formats like the social stage.
A significant development for 2026 is the inclusion of Games Done Quick, the renowned speedrunning event, which will mark its first in-person appearance outside of North America. This fully-fledged GDQ event will feature three days of speedrunning from August 28-30, streamed live from Gamescom on Twitch and YouTube, and will support the Gaming for Democracy charity initiative.
Regarding potential international expansion, Endres indicated that while plans are being made for the coming years, a North American iteration is not currently on the horizon. "Our focus is on Cologne as the central meeting point for the global industry and community, supported by our digital formats and our existing international events in Latin America and Asia," Heikhaus confirmed.
Gamescom 2026 is expected to feature a vast array of game announcements and showcases, with titles such as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Songs of the Past, Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, The Blood of Dawnwalker, Alien: Isolation 2, Fable, Star Wars: Galactic Racer, and Metro 2039 confirmed to be present. The event will be a focal point for gaming news, previews, and interviews throughout its duration.
