Gamescom 2026 has been marred by a series of thefts targeting independent game developers, with the event's organization acknowledging the incidents. Multiple studios reported the loss of valuable equipment, including laptops containing confidential company information and game demos, from their booths during the event. The response from the Gamescom organization has been described as underwhelming, with no clear indication of compensation for affected exhibitors.

The issue first gained widespread attention when Ryan Laley, a solo developer behind Mimic, reported that his laptop and other equipment were stolen overnight from an area that should have been secure and monitored. In a similar incident, Tessera Studios, showcasing its game "The Zibbo Show," lost personal computers, two laptops, and a Steam Deck. Publisher iam8bit Presents also reported the theft of two computers from its booth, potentially risking leaks of upcoming games like "Petal Runner" and "Escape Academy 2."

Ukiyo Studios shared a past experience of a laptop theft at Gamescom two years prior, claiming that event personnel at the time attempted to downplay the incident to protect the public image of the event and the city of Cologne. Ukiyo also stated that despite extensive experience at numerous gaming events, Gamescom is the only one where they implement overnight security measures due to perceived inadequate security.

In the wake of these reports, the gaming community has rallied to support the affected developers. IndieGameJoe, for instance, contributed funds to help Mimic's developer replace the stolen hardware. The official Gamescom account's response acknowledged the community's support and stated that the issue had been reported to authorities.

However, Gamescom's official response, which suggested that individual booth security could be booked in advance and that exhibitors should insure their equipment, has been met with criticism. Many developers feel this approach unfairly places the burden of responsibility on the exhibitors, rather than acknowledging potential shortcomings in the event's overall security measures. The thefts not only represent a financial loss for these independent creators but also raise concerns about the potential exposure of unreleased game builds. The incident has cast a shadow over the event, highlighting the need for improved security protocols to prevent future occurrences and ensure a safer environment for all participants.
