Garry Newman Admits "s&box" Launch Was "Shit," Vows Major Changes

Garry Newman, the creator of the immensely popular Garry's Mod, has publicly expressed deep regret and disappointment regarding the launch and reception of his studio's newest title, "s&box." In a candid reflection, Newman stated that the launch was "shit" and that his team "fucked it" by not being adequately prepared. The game, intended as a spiritual successor to Garry's Mod and built on the Source 2 engine, has struggled significantly since its release in April.

"s&box" was immediately met with a barrage of negative reviews, exacerbated by an influx of user-generated content perceived as low-quality AI "slop." While Facepunch Studios attempted to mitigate this issue by down-ranking AI-generated content, Newman's stance against a complete AI ban, citing its utility as a learning and productivity tool, did not fully appease the community. Currently, "s&box" holds a mere 47 percent positive rating on Steam.

Player engagement has been critically low. In stark contrast to the enduring popularity of Garry's Mod, which continues to attract nearly 30,000 concurrent players daily, "s&box" has struggled to reach even 500 players simultaneously, despite an estimated half-million to one million sales. A recent free weekend event on Steam, aimed at boosting player numbers, coincided with Newman's most critical assessment of the project to date.

Following these public admissions, Newman published a blog post on the official "s&box" website detailing his introspection. He confessed to feeling "embarrassed" and "ashamed" by the game's reviews and acknowledged the project's poor retention. The core mistake, he identified, was marketing "s&box" as a development platform rather than focusing on the player experience. "We fucked it. We weren’t ready and we fucked it," Newman reiterated. "I’ve let everyone down that was expecting that."

The revised strategy centers on enhancing the "Sandbox Game" itself to match and surpass the capabilities of Garry's Mod. This involves adding more NPCs, vehicles, improving multiplayer functionality, and bolstering support for addons and customization. Newman described this as a "relatively easy task" but admitted that the team had failed to deliver it thus far. He also recognized that his initial vision of a "Netflix for games" to help users discover content was not working and is not feasible, stating that human curation will be prioritized over AI discovery.

Furthermore, Facepunch is shifting its backend development entirely to the existing Steam Workshop infrastructure, deeming their custom backend a "waste of time and resources." In a significant move to attract players, "s&box" will transition from its current pricing model to free-to-play before the end of the year. Newman acknowledged that the combination of a purchase price and in-game skins may have been a deterrent. Players who have already purchased the game will receive exclusive Steam inventory items as compensation.

Newman concluded his statement with a plea for patience, emphasizing his passion for the engine and his desire to see people create with it. "The negative reviews hurt me. The disdain for the project hurts me. I don’t like letting people down, especially when they’ve given me money to provide a service. I understand it all and we’re making some big sweeping changes to try to improve things." It remains to be seen if these drastic measures can salvage the future of "s&box" after its tumultuous launch.
