A dedicated fan developer has released a native PC port of 2008's Gears of War 2, a title that, until now, had only been officially available on the Xbox 360. The project, named Gears of War 2: Hollow, aims to bring the beloved cover-based shooter to a new platform with significant technical improvements. While the port offers features like 4K resolution, 120FPS capabilities, and full mouse and keyboard support, it has also been met with reports of various technical problems.
The unofficial port was released on July 16 by a modder known as Helios. For many fans, this release was a surprise but a welcome one, as Gears of War 2 had remained an Xbox 360 exclusive for nearly two decades. Although the game is backward-compatible on modern Xbox Series X/S consoles, the lack of official PC ports for Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3 has long been a point of contention for players who wished to experience these titles on PC with enhanced visuals and performance.
According to Helios, Gears of War 2: Hollow was constructed using a leaked build of an unfinished, official PC version of the game. This broken build was then adapted to work with the assets from the final Xbox 360 release, resulting in a playable PC version of the main campaign. The port also includes support for cooperative play, though Helios indicated that this feature was not extensively tested and may not function as intended.
However, soon after its release, players began encountering texture and rendering issues, as well as performance problems. The port reportedly suffers from broken checkpoints, making progression through levels difficult. While some have speculated that the use of AI coding might be the cause of these issues, no concrete evidence has been provided to substantiate these claims.
Further complicating access to the port, some early players faced difficulties in locating the custom installer and necessary game files. While some of these resources were initially available on a Discord server created by Helios, that server appears to have been taken down or restricted. The files have since been shared through other channels, but their legal standing remains questionable, and there is a possibility of action from Microsoft to cease distribution.
Despite these shortcomings, the release represents a significant fan effort to preserve and enhance a classic title. The hope among the community is that Helios or other modders will continue to refine and improve this unofficial PC version. Alternatively, many players would welcome an official PC port of Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3 from Xbox, allowing fans to play these games without relying on fan-made reverse-engineered versions.
