The Coalition has detailed how Gears of War: E-Day will address a significant lore challenge regarding the debut of the series' iconic Lancer weapon. The Lancer, distinguished by its mounted chainsaw, is a symbol of the franchise, but its established creation story in the lore complicates its appearance during Emergence Day.
According to established Gears of War lore, the Lancer was developed a year after Emergence Day. This presented a narrative hurdle for The Coalition, as the game is set during the initial Locust invasion. To bridge this gap, the studio plans to introduce a Lancer prototype within Gears of War: E-Day, a concept with roots in the franchise's literary works. Creative director Matt Searcy explained that the team's approach prioritizes respecting the existing canon.
"Wherever possible, we've just done everything we can to respect the canon, right?" Searcy told GameSpot. "So even if we have to do like a small retcon, we just lift it and drop. We took the moment, we took the dialogue, we took everything about it and just said if we have to make a change, we're going to respect it as much as we possibly can, and if we need to connect the dots between two things, we're going to."
The inspiration for the Lancer prototype's early appearance stems from the 2008 novel Gears of War: The Aspho Fields by Karen Traviss. In the book, a Gear soldier named Tai Kaliso uses a power saw in combat, an action that eventually influences the development of the chainsaw attachment for Lancer rifles. The novel also depicts the death of Dominic Santiago's brother, Carlos, providing The Coalition with a foundational element for developing the relationship between Marcus Fenix and Dom early in the game's narrative.
"What it gave us was a really rich jumping-off point," Searcy elaborated. "So we knew E-Day is a plot point, two-thirds of the population dies, the monsters come out of the ground, and it's a cool concept. But we needed something rich for the characters to be based on, and that gave us a really strong starting point in terms of understanding where Marcus and Dom were before this game."
While the narrative campaign is a central focus for Gears of War: E-Day's early promotion, the game's multiplayer components, featuring overhauled movement systems, may also prove to be a significant draw for players. Gears of War: E-Day is slated for release on October 6 for Xbox Series X|S and PC.
