Gears of War: E-Day launched on October 1, offering early access players the latest entry in the cover-based shooter series. However, the game may not include all features fans might anticipate, a situation developers attribute to rebuilding the Gears formula from the ground up with new technology. "We started E-Day with an empty hard drive building our entire gameplay sandbox from scratch to ensure a more unified gameplay experience across Campaign, PVE and PVP," the development team stated in a blog post. "This new sandbox also allowed for innovation in cover, combat and enemies. The trade-off being that including every legacy feature from Gears of War was not possible for launch."
Specific features confirmed as absent at launch include meat shields, chainsaw duels, select past weapons, private lobbies, and leaderboards. The Coalition emphasized that these elements are not permanently removed from the franchise and that the team is focused on delivering a robust and stable initial experience. They are actively considering how and when to reintroduce or improve these fan-favorite features post-launch or in future titles.
The omission of features like private lobbies and ranked play has reportedly caused confusion and disappointment among some players, particularly long-time fans who consider these core components of the series' multiplayer. E-Day is the first new installment since Gears 5, which was released seven years prior.
While the new game boasts impressive visuals and significant overhauls to traversal and moment-to-moment gameplay, the reasons behind the development trade-offs remain somewhat unclear. Prior to E-Day, The Coalition was rumored to be working on two smaller projects that were reportedly canceled. Former professional Gears player Guy "Blaze" Spencer acknowledged the developers' efforts, noting that The Coalition appears to have responded positively to feedback and expressing curiosity about E-Day's evolution. The studio has already implemented balance tweaks to mechanics and weapons based on beta feedback and has outlined a content release schedule for the game's live-service model.
Versus Ranked multiplayer is slated for release on October 13. Season 1 will feature limited-time events such as Halloween, "20 Years of Gears," and "Thanksgibbing," concluding on December 1. Season 2, titled "Legacy and Beyond," is scheduled to begin thereafter, with content celebrating the franchise's "greatest hits" over two decades. The studio has also previewed the names for subsequent seasons on E-Day's calendar: Season 3: Infiltration, Season 4: Pendulum, and Season 5: Devotion.
