Gears of War: E-Day Devs Proud to Be an Xbox Exclusive Flagship

Developers at The Coalition, the studio behind Gears of War: E-Day, have voiced their pride in the game's status as a core Xbox exclusive. This sentiment comes as Microsoft has recently emphasized a renewed focus on exclusive titles across its gaming platforms.

In an interview, studio art director Aryan Hanbeck and creative director Matt Searcy discussed The Coalition's position within Xbox's game portfolio. Searcy stated that the team felt "proud" about Gears of War: E-Day being an Xbox exclusive. He emphasized the franchise's deep connection to Xbox's identity, noting that "Gears has such a long, storied… It's part of Xbox's DNA. It's woven into it."

While Gears of War: E-Day is confirmed as a console exclusive, there was some initial confusion regarding its platform availability. The franchise, historically an Xbox staple, saw its remaster Gears of War: Reloaded release on PlayStation consoles in August 2025, leading to speculation about the future of exclusive titles. However, rumors and leaked listings were definitively addressed during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced that the prequel story, focusing on Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago's Emergence Day, would be released exclusively for Xbox Series X/S and PC.

This decision coincided with a broader initiative by Microsoft to increase the number of exclusive games. The company also stated its intention to never release Xbox exclusive titles on rival platforms. The Coalition maintains that the platform choice for Gears of War: E-Day was not a last-minute decision, despite leaks that suggested a potential PS5 port was canceled.

Searcy commented on the team's motivation, stating, "We just wanted to make the best goddamn Gears game we could. We wanted it to be a technical and art showpiece." He added that seeing the game highlighted as a return to Xbox's exclusive roots was a significant moment. "We know how much Xbox means to a lot of people. We're proud to be one of Xbox's main titles – I think it's been that way for a long time – and it's pretty cool to show up now and fill that role again."

Gears of War: E-Day launched in early access on October 1, 2026, for PC and Xbox Series X/S players who purchased the Premium Edition, with its full release scheduled for October 6. An early review focusing on the campaign awarded the game a 9/10. The game's story director was laid off shortly before the early access launch, and reports suggest further layoffs may be anticipated at The Coalition.
