The Coalition has released a significant patch for Gears of War: E-Day, aiming to resolve a range of issues identified by early access players ahead of the game's full worldwide launch on October 6. The update focuses on enhancing overall stability and performance across all game modes, including the campaign, multiplayer, and the new Horde Siege mode.
A particularly notable fix targets the "Bilefrog-Kalona" error, a network issue that affected split-screen multiplayer. This bug, named after the game's formidable subterranean Locust frogs, would occur when a split-screen player was automatically signed out of online services after the console or PC went into a suspended state. The problem manifested when attempting to resume play via Quick Resume. The Coalition has also resolved an issue in Versus Social matches that could leave players stuck in a waiting-lobby loop, and a bug preventing certain Siege Blitz Secure objectives from being completed.
Campaign stability has also seen improvements, with several fixes applied to Act 2. Additionally, the patch addresses game-wide instances of sticky turrets and ensures that War Journal progress is accurately reflected, preventing players from receiving rewards earned before they joined an ongoing campaign session.
Specific campaign fixes include addressing an issue where the objective could fail to update in Act 2, Chapter 2, and ensuring a Heavy Gear appears correctly in a side objective. A fix has also been implemented for Act 4, Chapter 1, to prevent certain side objectives from failing to initiate if players entered the objective area during introductory dialogue. In Act 4, Chapter 2, a cause for the Power Station defense objective failing to complete after all visible enemies were defeated has been resolved.
In Horde Siege, the patch corrects an issue where the extraction helicopter might not appear during a Downtown West Blitz mission. For Versus mode, a fix addresses a bug in Demolition where a bomb could remain in a defusing state if a player was eliminated while starting the defuse interaction. The update also adjusts the size and appearance of Online Diagnostic text and resolves a potential cause of the UI repeatedly attempting to claim the same Challenge Mail reward.
These updates arrive just as Gears of War: E-Day prepares for its global release on PC and Xbox Series X|S, with a significant number of Game Pass subscribers expected to join the fray. While the campaign's narrative has been described as a low point for the series, the game itself is recommended for its bombastic, cover-based shooter gameplay and impressive visual presentation on current-generation hardware. As one review noted, "For better or worse, E-Day is distinctly Gears, and I had a good time with it, even if the story is disappointing and the open areas are fairly dull." The core combat remains a testament to the franchise's two-decade legacy, offering a solid, if familiar, experience.
