Gears of War: E-Day, developed by The Coalition, is set to mark a significant return for the storied franchise, aiming to recapture the series' initial impact. The game, slated for an October release, takes players back to Emergence Day, chronicling humanity's first brutal confrontation with the Locust Horde.
The development team has rebuilt the core gameplay from the ground up, introducing more fluid and natural movement while retaining the series' signature weighty feel. Controls have been updated to accommodate these changes, though a legacy layout option will be available for purists. These refinements are intended to enhance player flexibility and the overall feel of combat.
While the campaign was not part of the recent preview, both the Horde and Versus multiplayer modes were experienced. Versus mode remains a familiar staple of the Gears experience, offering classic competitive modes. The preview noted that the new gameplay mechanics add a fresh layer of excitement to established modes like 4v4 Team Deathmatch and Conquest.
Horde Siege, the evolved iteration of the popular Horde mode, appears to be a major focus. This mode pits up to 12 players, divided into three squads of four, against relentless waves of Locust on expansive maps. These maps are designed as a collection of interconnected arenas, reminiscent of Warzone's approach to its battleground. Success relies not only on surviving waves but also on completing secondary objectives, which grant squad perks. Cooperative play is emphasized, with opportunities to team up with other squads for challenging encounters, such as taking down large enemies like the Brumak.
Different variants of Horde Siege, including Blitz, Siege, and classic Horde, will be available, suggesting a comprehensive offering for cooperative play. The preview indicated a strong positive impression of Horde Siege, describing it as a well-developed and engaging experience for playing with friends.
Gears of War: E-Day is scheduled for release on October 6 for Xbox Series X|S and PC. Preordering the Premium Edition or Collector's Edition will grant early access to the full game starting October 1.
