Gears of War: E-Day Returns to Franchise Roots in Prequel Focused on Locust Emergence

The Coalition is taking Gears of War back to its origins with Gears of War: E-Day, a new entry set years before the original game, focusing on the Locusts' catastrophic emergence on the planet Sera. This prequel aims to revisit the series' roots, allowing players to experience the events that have largely only been alluded to in past titles.

The narrative unfolds over three critical days, depicting the fall of the city of Kalona during what The Coalition describes as an all-out monster invasion. Utilizing Unreal Engine 5, the developers have modeled the entire city, which, while not open-world, features distant vistas that players will see crumble as the chaos escalates. Studio Creative Director Matt Searcy explained that the game employs classic, linear Gears level design, featuring streets leading to combat arenas, with some sections opening up to wider city blocks. While the adventure is linear, with a constant main objective, players are guided through a carefully crafted narrative experience to immerse them in the events of Emergence Day.

Players will control Bravo Squad, a group of COGs brought together by the sudden outbreak of violence. The story begins shortly after the nearly 80-year Pendulum Wars conclude. Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago are in Kalona for a military ceremony, connected by their service and their shared remembrance of Dom's late brother, Carlos. Their expected peace is shattered when rifts open across the city, unleashing Locusts and resulting in widespread devastation. Marcus and Dom are joined in the fight by Lucas Reyes and Mags Carter, who are native to Kalona and will serve as guides. Studio Brand Director Nicole Fawcette highlighted that Mags is a former Gear with a dishonorable discharge, now working at an Imulsion refinery, while Lucas is also from the city. Together, these four characters band together, driven by their shared values and sense of duty, running towards the danger as Emergence Day unfolds.

Gears of War: E-Day will offer four-player online co-op and two-player split-screen co-op across all modes. Players can select any character from the outset and utilize an updated moveset, including jumping, sliding, and high mantles for enhanced traversal. Minor gameplay adjustments include the sprint camera pulling out for better spatial awareness and the active reload UI being centered on the screen for improved visibility.

Regarding the possibility of E-Day serving as the start of a larger prequel saga, Searcy remained guarded. He noted the franchise's rich lore and characters, stating that the team felt a strong desire to tell this specific story, making it their next mainline entry. While emphasizing a focus on successfully delivering E-Day, he acknowledged the abundance of storytelling opportunities across different Gears eras and characters, without committing to future projects.

While direct gameplay was not shown beyond what was revealed in the Xbox Showcase, the insights from The Coalition suggest Gears of War: E-Day could mark a significant return to form for the franchise. Gears of War: E-Day is slated for release on Xbox Series X/S and PC on October 6, 2026. (SOURCE1)
