Mike Crump, head of The Coalition, has responded to internal concerns about potential layoffs at the studio following the upcoming release of Gears of War: E-Day. Reports indicated that staff are worried about job security amid significant cuts at Xbox, with some anticipating further reductions or studio reorganizations.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma's strategic 'reset' of Microsoft's gaming division has already led to nearly 2,000 job losses this financial year, affecting various studios. Some game development studios have been shuttered or are in the process of closing, and a number of internal teams have been reorganized under different publishers within Microsoft, such as Rare and Obsidian.
While The Coalition has largely been spared from these layoffs, the studio's story director was reportedly let go just one week before Gears of War: E-Day's early access launch. When questioned about the internal anxieties, Crump emphasized focusing on controllable aspects, stating, "For us that's about shipping a great game that people are going to love and I feel like, as a team, we've done that."
Crump also suggested that E-Day is intended to serve as a "great foundation" for future installments in the Gears of War series. He specifically stated that "the next game will not take nearly as long" to develop, hinting at a more streamlined production process for subsequent titles. This comes despite Microsoft's earlier commitment in June 2024 to continue the main narrative of Gears of War and resolve the cliffhanger from Gears 5, even with E-Day being a prequel.
