Gears of War: E-Day Studio Head Defends Exclusivity as 'Natural Choice'

The Coalition Studio Head Mike Crump has defended the decision to make Gears of War: E-Day an Xbox exclusive, stating it was a "natural choice" and that the franchise is "sort of entwined deeply with the brand." Speaking to the BBC, Crump explained that the series is intended to "carry the banner for Xbox" and provide players with a "reason to be in the Xbox ecosystem."

Crump elaborated that success for Gears of War: E-Day is measured by more than just sales figures and player retention. "We measure things like, are we showcasing the platform? Are we pushing the hardware to its limits? Are we showcasing what the Xbox is capable of?" he stated. The studio's goal, according to Crump, is to "be the best-looking game on the Xbox and really show the industry what's possible with our hardware."

This focus on technical prowess is evident, as The Coalition utilized the SSD on Xbox Series S as additional RAM to ensure the game ran smoothly on the less powerful console. The game has also received critical acclaim, with IGN reviewer Ryan McCaffrey awarding it a 9/10. McCaffrey praised the game's return to the series' roots, highlighting its strong characters, evolved enemies and weapons, and compelling campaign that stands toe-to-toe with previous entries.

Despite the critical success and technical achievements, the exclusivity decision may impact overall sales numbers. Developers at The Coalition had reportedly anticipated layoffs following the game's launch, though Crump has since addressed these concerns, expressing confidence in the team's delivery of a beloved game. The success of Gears of War: E-Day, therefore, appears to be viewed by its studio leadership through a lens of platform promotion and technological demonstration, in addition to commercial performance.
