Severe weather descended upon Gen Con, North America's largest tabletop gaming convention, on Saturday, prompting tornado warnings and forcing attendees to take shelter. The storm caused significant rainfall to breach the ceiling of the Indiana Convention Center, leading to leaks that soaked convention spaces and posed a risk to valuable gaming materials.
The National Weather Service issued tornado warnings for central Indiana, including downtown Indianapolis and the convention center, around 5:30 PM. In response, convention organizers used the venue's speaker system to instruct attendees to move to safer areas of the building. Simultaneously, heavy rain began leaking through the convention center's ceiling, impacting areas where attendees were gathered and vendors displayed their wares.
Videos and social media posts from the event depicted the unusual circumstances, with one publisher noting, "It's raaaining at Gennn Con! Oh no..." Another attendee shared footage showing staff attempting to manage the incoming water with large bins, as water cascaded onto tables, particularly in the playtest area. Some vendors reported that their own display areas were also affected by the leaks.
Founded in 1968 by Dungeons & Dragons creator Gary Gygax, Gen Con has been a significant event for the tabletop gaming community for decades. It serves as a key venue for major announcements from publishers like Wizards of the Coast and is a central gathering point for fans of role-playing games, board games, and collectible card games. The convention relocated to Indianapolis in 2003.
While weather disruptions are not uncommon during this time of year, the intensity of the storm and the subsequent roof leakage were described as unprecedented. Fortunately, the warning was lifted after a few hours, and no injuries were reported. The convention continued as scheduled on Sunday, with the severe weather spell having passed.
