Genshin Impact's Version 7.0 update has introduced a significant new gameplay mechanic: a third-person shooter (TPS) mode featuring firearms. Prior to this update, guns were primarily limited to specific character abilities or special in-game events. These new firearms are integral to dedicated TPS stages and are not usable in the open world.

To unlock the TPS mode and the ability to wield firearms, players must acquire the 'Eye of Graeae' accessory. This item is obtained by progressing through Snezhnaya and completing approximately twenty minutes of the Archon Quest Chapter VII storyline. Players only need to have completed the Prologue story in Mondstadt to access Snezhnaya and begin these quests.

Upon obtaining the 'Eye of Graeae,' players gain access to several starting firearms: Shatanaya's Frostsilver, a Cryo Rifle designed for precise shots; Balsag's Sunwheel, a Grenade Launcher capable of delivering large area-of-effect elemental damage; and various elemental Frag Crystals. An additional firearm, Ashamez's Thunder, an Electro Rifle with automatic lock-on targeting, becomes available through a later challenge. HoYoverse has indicated that more firearms will be added in future updates.

Guns and Third-Person Shooter Mechanics

The newly implemented TPS mode brings mechanics reminiscent of cover-based shooters, including sliding and cover systems. While the core gunplay is new, it retains Genshin Impact's elemental system, with each gun and Frag Crystal utilizing a different element. Players can also activate 'Breakthrough,' which functions similarly to an ultimate ability. This mode is exclusively accessible through stages within the Shadow Realm, marked by purple icons on the map, or via the Edge of Survival mode found within the shooting range on the player's personal train.

Within these TPS stages, players can switch between their firearms and utilize environmental elements, such as explosive barrels and breakable ice, to overcome enemy groups and bosses. Objectives typically involve eliminating all enemies or achieving the highest possible score within a time limit. While regular Shadow Realm stages are designed to be manageable, higher difficulty levels in Edge of Survival offer greater challenges and rewards for skilled players. A shooting range is available to help players practice and refine their aiming skills.

Customizing Controls and Upgrading Firearms

Upon unlocking firearms, players are presented with two control scheme options. Preset 1 offers a layout more aligned with traditional shooter games, while Preset 2 aims to maintain a Genshin Impact-like feel or cater to players less familiar with shooter controls. Both options can be adjusted further in the game's settings menu. The game also includes accessibility features such as Aim Assist, customizable auto-snapping, togglable aiming mode activation upon firing, and optional gyro controls for controller users. Players are encouraged to use the TPS shooting range to fine-tune these settings.

Firearms can be upgraded by visiting a Firearm Workbench or by equipping the 'Eye of Graeae' gadget and selecting the 'Assemble' option. The Firearm Workbench is conveniently located on the player's personal train, which can be summoned near railway tracks. Upgrading weapons requires blueprints, and crafted parts can enhance firearms with benefits such as faster reloading, increased ammunition capacity, and improved damage output.

Acquiring Accessories and Blueprints

Gun accessories and their corresponding blueprints are acquired through various activities, including clearing Shadow Realms, participating in Shadow Realm – Edge of Survival challenges, and accessing Shadow Realm Vaults. To open Vaults, players must upgrade a 'mysterious access card' to a sufficient level. Once blueprints are obtained, they can be crafted and installed via the 'Eye of Graeae' menu or at the Firearm Workbench on the player's train.
