GeoGuessr, the long-standing free browser game that challenges players to identify real-world locations from Google Street View images, has undergone a significant genre shift with the addition of a roguelike survival-horror experience titled HorrorGuessr. This new mode introduces a persistent threat, transforming the familiar deduction gameplay into a race against time.
In HorrorGuessr, players must still correctly identify their surroundings using Street View imagery. However, they are now pursued by a monster, adding a layer of urgency to the guessing process. To aid survivors, the game incorporates power-ups and over 100 unique items. A merchant character offers boosts such as a Garlic Pendant designed to momentarily repel the pursuing entity, and candy corn earplugs intended to mitigate jump scares. Successful survival for extended periods can lead to encounters with bosses who guard valuable loot, with the game's description warning that these encounters can have disorienting effects, like flipping the player's perspective or freezing them in place.
This iteration of GeoGuessr is designed to be challenging. While specialized load-outs and equipped items can extend a player's survival time, only a limited number of items can be carried. Crucially, players must maintain a degree of skill in the core GeoGuessr mechanics, needing to pinpoint locations within approximately 30 seconds at the outset of each run. Items are available to provide some leniency for incorrect guesses. As is typical with roguelike titles, death is presented as an integral part of the gameplay loop, intended to provide learning opportunities for subsequent runs and expose players to the various ways an adventure can unfold.
HorrorGuessr is available for free, and players can try it now via the official GeoGuessr website.
