Speaking at the Gamescom event in Cologne, Germany, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has urged a careful consideration of the negative aspects of gaming, alongside its many positive contributions to society. "Video games have become so ubiquitous," Steinmeier stated, as reported by DPA International, making it essential to "discuss the downsides of this development" with an objective and honest approach.
Steinmeier referenced warnings from the World Health Organization regarding gaming addiction. He further elaborated on concerns that some video games can expose players to "brutality and raw violence, to sexism, racism, inhuman thinking, and extremist ideologies." This highlights a facet of the medium that warrants scrutiny, according to the president.
However, the German President also challenged outdated perceptions of gamers. He dismissed the stereotype of a gamer as someone perpetually playing in isolation, consuming junk food and energy drinks, stating this "does not do justice to reality." He emphasized that gaming has integrated deeply into the fabric of society, noting its expansive presence. "Games have long since found their place at the heart of our society," he remarked. Steinmeier also pointed to the technological advancements in gaming that have positively impacted other sectors, such as medicine, architecture, and automotive design, underscoring the broader influence of the industry.
