Ghost of Yōtei's 'Echoes of Sekigahara' DLC Adds Much-Needed Depth to Atsu

The new expansion for Ghost of Yōtei, titled Echoes of Sekigahara, significantly enriches the player character Atsu, a development so impactful that it feels like it should have been part of the base game from its initial launch.

Life Before the Onryō

In the original Ghost of Yōtei, Atsu's driving force is revenge against the Yōtei Six, the masked assassins responsible for her family's death. While her singular focus on vengeance is central to her narrative, her character remained largely static until the game's conclusion. Echoes of Sekigahara shifts this by delving into the consequences of her actions and exploring her past.

Before her transformation into the Onryō, Atsu was a wandering sword for hire, participating in battles and serving various lords. Her past includes a stint serving Lord Ishida during the Battle of Sekigahara, where she met Nagato the Handsome. Their initial interactions, particularly Nagato guiding Atsu's hands on a bow, hint at a romantic connection that adds a softer dimension to Atsu, revealing her capacity for love even amidst her unfulfilled quest for vengeance. Flashbacks within Echoes of Sekigahara further illuminate their relationship, showing a version of Atsu who envisions a future with Nagato away from her revenge quest. This romantic entanglement ultimately takes a tragic turn, aligning with the overarching theme of revenge in Ghost of Yōtei. The present-day narrative of Echoes of Sekigahara sees Atsu heading to the Ashoro Foothills after learning of a bounty on Nagato's head. Years after Sekigahara, their reunion is fraught with tension, but they eventually cooperate to disrupt Lord Saito's operations. Throughout their journey, they confront their past actions and regrets, prompting reflection on how Atsu's path might have differed had her history with Nagato been less fraught. Actress Erika Ishii, recognized for her previous award-nominated performances, brings nuance to Atsu in Echoes of Sekigahara. Ishii expertly conveys both Atsu's vulnerability and tenderness in quieter moments with Nagato, such as a shared contemplation of their future by a hot spring, as well as her inherent ferocity and thirst for revenge. ## Revenge Comes at a Cost The expansion also examines the broader impact of Atsu's revenge. The Ashoro Foothills, once under the protection of the Yōtei Six member known as the Snake, have fallen into disarray after his death. His absence created a power vacuum, leading to increased violence and instability as his former gang, the Vipers, vie for control and exploit the local population. ![Ghost of Yotei Echoes of Sekigahara screenshot (16)](https://static0.polygonimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/ghost-of-yotei-echoes-of-sekigahara-screenshot-16.jpeg?q=49&fit=crop&w=1300&dpr=2 ")

Echoes of Sekigahara illustrates that Atsu's quest for vengeance has far-reaching consequences, affecting ordinary people and even the region's wildlife. The game juxtaposes the serene beauty of nature, a recurring element in Ghost of Yōtei with its foxes to pet and scenic vistas, against the devastation wrought by the Vipers who hunt indiscriminately to supply Lord Saito's army. This destruction is highlighted when Atsu's wolf companion, Mikage, is targeted, providing further motivation to confront the antagonists.

New Ways to Slay

Echoes of Sekigahara introduces new gameplay elements to combat. Atsu's wolf companion, Mikage, frequently assists in battles, and a side quest allows Atsu to acquire armor that transforms one of her Spirit abilities into a wolf summoning attack, reflecting her growing connection to the world.

Heavy weapons that break after use are also added, alongside an armor set that grants a bow attack capable of headshotting multiple enemies simultaneously. While these additions do not drastically alter the combat flow, they provide welcome variety to battles that can become repetitive after extended play.

Enemy archers are made more challenging with a new arrow type that incapacitates Atsu, requiring her to remove it before she can heal or use Spirit abilities. This adds a layer of difficulty, particularly in duels against fast and relentless opponents.

Despite these new mechanics, the game's standoffs remain a highlight. However, the primary strength of Echoes of Sekigahara lies in its character development and narrative exploration, which flesh out Atsu's story in ways the base game did not, adding significant depth to her motivations and the repercussions of her journey.

Ghost of Yōtei: Echoes of Sekigahara is available on PlayStation 5. The game was reviewed on PS5 using a prerelease download code provided by Sony Interactive Entertainment.
