Ghost of Yōtei Sales Lag Behind Tsushima But Remain Strong on PS5, Analyst Data Suggests

Ghost of Yōtei sales are reportedly trailing behind its predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima, though still achieving strong numbers on the PlayStation 5, according to estimates from Alinea Analytics. Rhys Elliott, head of marketing analysis at Alinea, shared data indicating that Ghost of Yōtei has sold approximately 5.4 million units and generated $407 million in revenue.

A significant portion of these sales, 36.8%, came from physical copies, and PlayStation Store discounts have been notably scarce for the title. In the third quarter of 2026 alone, around 500,000 copies were sold. Additionally, the digital Complete Edition, which includes the new Echoes of Sekigahara expansion, sold 50,000 units in the two weeks following its release as a replacement for the base digital game. Approximately 6% of the existing player base has engaged with this new content.

Compared to Ghost of Tsushima's performance at a similar point in its lifecycle, Ghost of Yōtei's revenue is neck and neck. Ghost of Tsushima, launched in July 2020, had generated approximately $418 million by its first year. Factoring in Ghost of Yōtei's $70 base price against Ghost of Tsushima's $60 launch price and its earlier discounts, Elliott estimates that Tsushima sold closer to 7 million copies in the same timeframe.

Elliott highlighted that while Ghost of Tsushima sold more units, Ghost of Yōtei benefits from a larger installed base of PS5 consoles. At the time of Tsushima's comparable lifecycle stage, there were around 117 million PS4s and 10 million PS5s in circulation, whereas Ghost of Yōtei, a PS5 exclusive, launched with nearly 100 million PS5s available. Despite this, the revenue per buyer for Ghost of Yōtei is approximately 26% higher than Tsushima's, aligning with PlayStation's strategy to increase revenue per player.

While Ghost of Yōtei's revenue growth has begun to flatten more than Tsushima's did, Elliott suggested that the influx of PS5 consoles driven by Grand Theft Auto VI's release might provide a boost. He also emphasized that Ghost of Yōtei has proven to be an evergreen title in a competitive market, selling 1.8 million copies and generating $121 million this year alone, with minimal discounts.

Elliott concluded that any claims of Ghost of Yōtei being a flop are incorrect. The game, which launched in October 2025, received an 8/10 review from IGN, praising its story, visuals, and fluid combat, describing it as a "great distillation of the samurai fantasy." Recently, the game added a new armor set inspired by PlayStation's The Last of Us.
