God of War Laufey is set to launch on February 16, 2027. The confirmation arrived during the game's panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, an event attended by IGN.

This 2027 release aligns with expectations following Sony Santa Monica's prior confirmation that the game would be available on disc. The announcement comes amid broader industry discussions about the future of physical media, following Sony's statement regarding the cessation of PlayStation disc production starting in 2028.

At the same panel, Cory Barlog, head of creative at Santa Monica Studio, revealed that the subsequent Kratos-led God of War title will follow God of War Laufey and will directly connect to Laufey's narrative. Initial reactions to God of War Laufey have been divided. Some players have expressed approval for the game's combat and visual presentation, while others have voiced criticism regarding the perceived simplicity of the gameplay shown in Laufey's opening segments, as well as the absence of Kratos as the central protagonist.

The first substantial look at God of War Laufey was presented as a 20-minute gameplay segment during June's PlayStation State of Play showcase. This segment depicted Kratos and Atreus burning Faye's body, a scene reminiscent of 2018's God of War. Kratos reappears later in the gameplay preview, assisting Faye during a brief period of imprisonment. The extent of Kratos's role in the game beyond these initial appearances, especially considering his involvement in the events of God of War Ragnarök, remains unclear.
