The upcoming PlayStation 5 title, God of War Laufey, slated for release next February, presents a significant indicator of Sony's future direction regarding physical media. While the standard edition will be available as a physical disc, the deluxe edition will be strictly digital-only, a move that underscores Sony's gradual shift away from physical game discs.
This strategy aligns with Sony's announcement earlier this year that it would cease production of physical PlayStation game discs beginning in January 2028. This impending change has drawn considerable criticism from players who value the ability to resell, trade, or share physical copies. Despite player backlash and even a recent week-long boycott, Sony appears committed to its digital-first vision, with God of War Laufey's deluxe edition serving as the latest evidence.
The decision to offer a digital-only deluxe version suggests that PlayStation is positioning physical copies as a less desirable option. Instead of including digital deluxe bonuses as a separate download, the exclusion from physical editions actively discourages physical media consumption. Even the promotional imagery for the standard edition of God of War Laufey reportedly emphasizes the physical copy as being noticeably smaller than its digital counterpart's logo, subtly suggesting inferiority.
This approach is not isolated to God of War Laufey. PlayStation has employed similar tactics with recent major releases. Marvel's Wolverine also offered a physical copy exclusively for its standard edition. Last year's Ghost of Yotei followed suit, making physical discs available only for the base game while both the deluxe and the collector's editions were digital. The $250 collector's edition of Ghost of Yotei notably included the game digitally alongside various physical merchandise.
Prior to these, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered in 2024, priced at $99, included a physical disc with a collector's bundle that featured collectible cards, pins, a fabric patch, and a steelbook case, alongside the game disc. These examples illustrate a consistent pattern of bundling physical editions with extra merchandise rather than prioritizing the physical disc itself as the primary offering for premium versions.
While it remains possible that Sony could reconsider its stance on physical discs before the 2028 deadline, current strategies indicate a firm commitment to a disc-less future. The prevailing approach suggests that the company's leadership believes consumers interested in collector's editions do not necessarily require physical copies of the games themselves for their collections.
