God of War Laufey is set to release on February 16, 2027, marking a significant shift for the franchise by placing Kratos's wife, Faye, at the forefront as the protagonist. This departure from Kratos-centric narratives was officially announced during San Diego Comic-Con 2026.

The game will be a PlayStation 5 exclusive, aligning with Sony's reported strategy to keep its single-player titles on consoles for an extended period before potential PC releases. This means that titles like God of War Laufey, Saros, and Ghost of Yotei are unlikely to appear on PC shortly after their initial launch. Amidst industry trends, God of War Laufey will receive a physical disc release, though it is expected to be among the last major first-party PS5 games to do so before Sony ceases disc production in January 2028.

Development is helmed by Sony Santa Monica, the studio behind the previous entries in the series. Ariel Lawrence, who has been with the studio since 2003 and contributed to early game trailers, is directing the project. Lawrence's tenure at Sony Santa Monica included work on the 2018 God of War before returning to lead this new endeavor.

Gameplay in God of War Laufey emphasizes fluid combat and world-building, with Faye’s agile and magical fighting style contrasting with Kratos's brute force. Players will utilize Faye's mastery of magic, specifically her Golden Hand of the Jötnar abilities, alongside swift sword combos. The combat system is designed for hyper-responsiveness, allowing seamless transitions between ground and air attacks. Faye’s amplified soul-manipulating magic enables her to separate spirits from enemies, creating openings for devastating combos.

The narrative centers on Faye's awakening in the afterlife, known as the Everywhen, a realm where gods and mythical creatures converge. Having died prior to the game's events, Faye must confront powerful gods from various pantheons to protect the plans she established for Kratos and their son, Atreus. The Everywhen serves as both the origin and destination for all magic, and the game will explore the fates of deities post-mortem. Characters such as Sekhmet and Begtse have been revealed, and the presence of gods Kratos previously vanquished is anticipated given Faye's connection to him.

Faye is portrayed by actress Deborah Ann Woll. She is joined by Phranque, a cosmic cube character voiced by Jack Quaid, and Rue, an enchanted ribbon guardian and protector of a powerful sword, voiced by Perlina Lau. Sony Santa Monica has stated that elements for God of War Laufey have been developed over nearly a decade, with subtle hints planted as far back as 2018.

Looking ahead, Sony Santa Monica has confirmed Kratos will feature in a new game following God of War Laufey. Additionally, a remake of the original God of War trilogy is planned. A live-action TV series adaptation is also in development, though the role of Kratos is currently being recast due to a previous actor's injury.
