God of War Laufey, a highly anticipated entry in Sony's acclaimed series, has become the subject of online criticism despite its recent showcase in a State of Play livestream. The game marks a departure from tradition by not featuring Kratos as the central protagonist, instead focusing on his late wife, Faye. This narrative shift has drawn negative attention from a segment of the internet, with much of the ire directed at Deborah Ann Woll, the actress portraying Faye.

Woll, however, has adopted a resilient approach to the backlash. "Genuinely, I thought I was going to be much more affected by it. But one, I'm like not on social media so that helps, and two, I don't know, I feel totally unbothered because I just know it's great," Woll stated to TikTokker Quinnphobic at Florida SuperCon. She added that while she understands the game might not appeal to everyone, "in no universe is it bad."

The development of God of War Laufey has been a multi-year endeavor for Sony Santa Monica, spanning nearly a decade. Addressing claims that the game's narrative is influenced by gender or sex, Woll clarified in a prior interview that the story is centered on themes of parenthood, regret, and personal growth. "This is a story about a parent. This is a story about regret. This is about being a better person than who you were before," she explained.

In addition to Faye, the game will feature Jack Quaid, known for his role in The Boys, as a character named Phranque, described as a gelatinous cube. God of War Laufey is slated for release on PlayStation 5. With a confirmed physical release, the game is anticipated to launch before Sony discontinues disc production in January 2028, suggesting a potential 2027 release window.
