Deborah Ann Woll, the voice actor for Laufey in the upcoming God of War title, has expressed indifference toward the online backlash surrounding the game. Woll stated that she is "totally unbothered" by the criticism because she is confident in the quality of the project.
Santa Monica Studio revealed the new God of War game, titled God of War Laufey, during a recent State of Play presentation. While the announcement generated excitement among many players, it also drew criticism concerning various aspects, including a new cube sidekick voiced by Jack Quaid, the game's combat, and Woll's portrayal of the protagonist, Faye. Some observers have suggested that a portion of the negative sentiment stems from sexism directed at the game.
Woll, also known for her roles in Daredevil and True Blood, commented on the response to her latest role during an appearance at Florida Supercon. She indicated that her detachment from social media contributes to her lack of concern regarding the online discourse. "Genuinely, I thought I was going to be much more offended by it, but one, I'm not on social media, so that helps, and two, I don't know, I feel totally unbothered," Woll said. "Because I just know it's great. It's okay if it's not your cup of tea, but in no universe is it bad."
God of War Laufey is set to feature Faye as the central protagonist, diverging from Kratos's typical role. Early gameplay demonstrations have showcased Faye's combat style, which incorporates magical abilities and a sword, distinct from Kratos's signature Leviathan Axe. The concept for a Faye-centric God of War game has reportedly been in development for some time, with director Cory Barlog having shared initial ideas nearly a decade before the game's official announcement.
While God of War Laufey does not have a confirmed release date, it is anticipated to launch for the PlayStation 5 in 2027. Santa Monica Studio has assured fans that Kratos will appear in at least one scene and will continue to be a part of future installments in the series. Further insights into player skepticism following the reveal have been provided by God of War Laufey director Ariel Lawrence.
