Production on Amazon MGM and Sony Pictures’ God of War series has encountered a significant setback, with star Ryan Hurst, who was set to portray Kratos, reportedly sustaining a severe bicep tear while filming a stunt. The injury has necessitated the recasting of the iconic character.
Hurst reportedly tore his bicep during a stunt in Vancouver, requiring surgery and extensive recovery. This injury has led to a reassessment of the production schedule. While initial reports suggested filming could be delayed as far as 2027, subsequent updates indicate a revised restart aimed for mid-October 2026, with pre-production preparations commencing in mid-August.
The decision to recast Kratos follows careful consideration by Amazon MGM and Sony Pictures, as Hurst’s recovery timeline would significantly disrupt the production schedule. Reports indicate that Hurst had gained approximately 40 pounds to embody the character and has already undergone surgery.
This is not the first challenge the God of War adaptation has faced. In 2024, showrunner Rafe Judkins departed the project, with Ronald D. Moore, known for his work on Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, taking over later that year. The series, slated to stream on Prime Video, does not yet have a release date.
Previously released imagery showcased Ryan Hurst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as Atreus. The cast also includes Ed Skrien as Baldur, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Max Parker as Heimdall, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Danny Woodburn as Brok, and Jeff Gulka as Sindri. Alastair Duncan, who voiced Mimir in the games, reprises his role for the series.
