Production on Amazon Prime Video's adaptation of the popular video game series God of War has encountered a significant setback, necessitating the recasting of the central role of Kratos due to a serious injury sustained by lead actor Ryan Hurst.

According to reports, Hurst tore a bicep while performing a stunt in late June. The injury required surgery and is expected to result in a recovery period of four to six months, with a full return to strength potentially taking up to a year. Given the physically demanding nature of portraying Kratos, it is unlikely Hurst could safely resume filming until mid-to-late 2027.

Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, the studios behind the series, determined that the production schedule could not accommodate such an extensive delay. Consequently, the difficult decision to recast the role was made. Shooting is anticipated to resume in mid-October, though no successor for Hurst has been announced.

It is also probable that significant portions of the show will need to be reshot to maintain continuity, particularly concerning the appearance of Atreus, who is portrayed by child actor Callum Vinson. The prolonged delay could lead to noticeable changes in Vinson's appearance, necessitating a re-record of earlier scenes.

In addition to Hurst's portrayal of Kratos, the God of War series cast includes Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, and Max Parker as Heimdall, among others.
