Production on Amazon MGM and Sony Pictures’ God of War television series has encountered a significant setback, with star Ryan Hurst, who was set to portray Kratos, suffering a severe bicep tear. The injury, sustained during a stunt filming in Vancouver, has forced the studios to recast the iconic character. Reports indicate the tear requires surgery, making Hurst unavailable for an extended period.

Initially, sources suggested filming could be delayed until 2027, but subsequent reports from Deadline confirmed that a recast is necessary to keep production on schedule. Hurst had reportedly gained 40 pounds to embody Kratos. He has undergone surgery and is now recovering. Preparations for filming are expected to resume in mid-August 2026, with shooting slated to recommence in mid-October 2026.

The series has faced other production challenges, including the departure of showrunner Rafe Judkins in 2024. Ronald D. Moore has since joined the project as showrunner. The adaptation, slated for release on Prime Video, has not yet announced a release date.

Previously released promotional materials featured Ryan Hurst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as Atreus, alongside Ed Skrein as Baldur. The cast also includes notable actors such as Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Max Parker as Heimdall, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Danny Woodburn as Brok, and Jeff Gulka as Sindri. Alastair Duncan, who voiced Mimir in the games, is reprising his role for the series.

While the search for a new Kratos is underway, a spin-off title, God of War Laufey, focusing on Kratos's second wife, is also in development.
