Godzilla Minus Zero, the highly anticipated sequel to the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One, is set to release later this year, continuing the story of survivors in a kaiju-ravaged, post-World War II Tokyo. A new trailer released by Toho and distributor GKIDS offers a glimpse into the escalating conflict, revealing that disaster-response officials are considering the use of thermonuclear weapons to combat the returning King of All Monsters. This drastic measure is met with apprehension, as one character warns of crossing another "moral boundary mankind should not cross."
The film will see the return of key cast members from its predecessor, including Ryunosuke Kamiki as protagonist Koichi Shikishima, Minami Hamabe as Noriko Shikishima, and Hidetaka Yoshioka as Kenji Noda, who now directs Tokyo's Disaster Response Bureau. Newcomer Min Tanaka joins the ensemble as Kanji Murakami, a biologist scarred by the war. Other returning actors include Yuki Yamada, Kuranosuke Sasaki, Sakura Ando, and Mio Tanaka.
Toho and GKIDS have provided an official synopsis for the film: "War reduced Japan to zero, and Godzilla plunged it into minus. Two years have passed since then, and the country has faced agonizing struggles to achieve recovery and finally reclaim its daily life. Just as humanity managed to cling to a hard-won peace, a new threat strikes, crushing hope in an instant. There is no third time. Everything ends here."
The previous teaser trailer, released in April, depicted Godzilla making his way towards New York City, passing the Statue of Liberty and signaling his return to the city for the first time since 1998's Godzilla.
Oscar-winning filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki is returning to direct, write, and lead visual effects for Godzilla Minus Zero. The film is slated for release on November 3 in Japan and November 6 in North America. Notably, Godzilla Minus Zero was filmed in Japan using high-definition digital cameras certified by IMAX, marking it as the first Japanese production to be filmed for the IMAX format.
