Godzilla is officially returning to the big screen in "Godzilla Minus Zero," as revealed by Toho's first full trailer for the film. This direct sequel to Takashi Yamazaki's Oscar-winning "Godzilla Minus One" appears to pick up in post-World War II Japan as the nation grapples with the aftermath of the previous film's events. The trailer suggests the story will explore the continued struggles of the country and the lingering threat of the iconic kaiju.
Kenji Noda, a former Naval weapons engineer played by Hidetaka Yoshioka who was instrumental in the previous film's anti-Godzilla strategy, is heard remarking, "We didn’t finish the job like we thought." Despite past apparent defeats, Godzilla is back, forcing Japan to assemble a new task force to combat the menace. Subtitles in the trailer indicate a sense of finality, stating, "There is no third time. Everything ends here," hinting that "Minus Zero" may be marketed as the concluding chapter of the "Minus" film series.
The trailer also reunites audiences with "Godzilla Minus One" protagonists Shikishima, portrayed by Ryunosuke Kamiki, and Noriko, played by Minami Hamabe. The film will be the first Japanese production shot for IMAX, with the trailer demonstrating this by expanding to a 1:43:1 aspect ratio during certain sequences, including an aerial battle featuring Shikishima. A notable shot shows Godzilla falling from the sky, accompanied by Noda’s observation, "This isn’t Godzilla we are talking about," raising questions about the nature of this iteration of the monster or the potential for another kaiju's involvement.
"Godzilla Minus Zero" is set to release in theaters on November 6. It is important to note that this film and Legendary Pictures' "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" exist in separate canonical universes. "Godzilla Minus One" was the 33rd Japanese-produced Godzilla film from Toho, the original rights holder. Legendary Pictures' "Monsterverse" franchise, which includes films like "Godzilla" (2014) and "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," is a separate continuity. Legendary Pictures is also developing "Godzilla x Kong: Supernova," a sequel to "The New Empire," slated for release on March 26, 2027.
