GOG Galaxy, the client application for the DRM-free game storefront GOG.com, is set to receive a major overhaul scheduled for release in 2027. A significant announcement from GOG's recent "GOG Showcase" revealed that the client will not only be revamped for Windows and macOS but will also officially launch on Linux. This marks a notable expansion for the platform, aiming to provide a more streamlined and performant experience across multiple operating systems.
According to GOG, the updated client will feature a simpler interface, faster operation, and enhanced ways to manage a user's game library. The company emphasized that GOG Galaxy remains an optional tool, and users will continue to have access to offline installers for their purchased games, ensuring continued access to digital ownership even in the event of service disruptions.
For Linux users, the introduction of GOG Galaxy is particularly noteworthy. While existing third-party tools like Heroic, Faugus, and Lutris already offer functionality for managing games from multiple storefronts on Linux, the official support from a major platform like GOG is seen as a positive development for the broader PC gaming ecosystem on the operating system.
In addition to the GOG Galaxy updates, the company also announced GOG Social, a new feature designed to facilitate community interaction. This platform aims to centralize discussions around game-related content such as screenshot galleries and videos, offering threaded replies and an experience free from algorithmic content curation.
