Google has shared insights into the design philosophy behind its new Noto 3D emoji collection, emphasizing a move towards more expressive and nuanced digital communication. In a blog post for World Emoji Day, the company detailed its approach, which prioritizes emotional resonance over literal representation.

The design team noted a shift in how people express themselves online, moving beyond simple reactions to more complex emotions. "We don't just 'laugh' anymore," Google stated. "We collapse, or internally scream. Modern internet culture has steadily moved from mild expressions to drama, hyperbole and overwhelm." This evolution is reflected in the changing popularity of emojis, with "face with tears of joy" (😂) reportedly seeing a decline while emojis like "loudly crying face" (😭) have gained prominence for their ability to convey a wider range of intense feelings.

Google highlighted the significant impact emojis have on communication, noting that the brain processes them faster than text. Therefore, the design process requires careful consideration. The company aimed to imbue the emojis with "a pulse and a soul—not the cold precision of industrial CAD models." This philosophy extends to the depiction of elements like animals, where the focus is on capturing their "playful vibe" rather than anatomical accuracy, as seen in their approach to illustrating kangaroos. Large-scale user studies were conducted to refine the iconography, with findings indicating a preference for full-body representations over floating heads and the significant impact of subtle design changes.

Designers also grappled with the practicalities of 3D rendering, considering how emojis would appear from various angles and questioning their fundamental shapes, such as whether a smiley face should be perceived as a disc or a sphere. Following the completion of the design work, Google is making the raw .OBJ files available to the community. This move is intended to empower users to incorporate the 3D emojis into VR worlds, indie applications, and user-generated content, fostering new forms of digital expression and creative remixing.
