Google has announced the discontinuation of the Tenor API, a move that will significantly impact how animated GIFs are shared across various non-Google platforms. Developers were notified in January that new API key sign-ups and integrations would cease, and the API itself is scheduled for a full shutdown on June 30, 2026. This decision forms part of Google's ongoing strategy to concentrate resources on its core products.

While the Tenor website will remain accessible for users to browse and find GIFs, the API was the crucial conduit that enabled seamless integration into third-party applications. This functionality allowed users to easily search and share reaction GIFs on platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) and Discord. The API's demise means that these services, along with others that relied on it, will lose direct access to Tenor's extensive library.

Tenor, originally founded as Riffsy in 2014, was acquired by Google in 2018 and subsequently integrated into Google products like Gboard, Google Chat, and Google Messages. Google has stated that Tenor will continue to be accessible within these first-party applications and through its dedicated GIF Keyboard for Android and iOS devices. However, the closure of the API effectively isolates other platforms from this resource.

Platforms like X have already begun migrating away from Tenor, according to reports. Discord has experimented with integrations from both Giphy and Klipy, seemingly favoring the latter. WhatsApp and Bluesky are also noted to be seeking alternative solutions. The challenge for these platforms lies in replicating the vastness and specific content of Tenor's database, a situation that has reportedly caused user frustration. With the API sunsetting, creators may need to explore options for generating their own animated GIFs.
