The PC hardware market is facing a challenging period, exacerbated by a global memory shortage that has driven up prices. Amidst this environment, new GPU release timelines are being called into question. Prolific hardware leaker Kepler_L2 suggests that only a single AMD GPU, codenamed AT2, is slated for release in 2027. According to Kepler_L2, all other new GPU releases from both AMD and Nvidia are not expected until 2028.
AT2 is reportedly the GPU intended for the upcoming Xbox Project Helix, which has been anticipated for a 2027 launch. While the release of one new AMD GPU next year is not entirely unexpected, the claim that it will be the sole new GPU release from the company—and that it will be a mid-range offering rather than a top-tier model—is significant.
Speculation regarding AMD's RDNA 5 architecture has previously pointed to a high-end GPU, codenamed AT0, featuring 96 compute units and intended to compete with Nvidia's RTX 6080-level performance. If Kepler_L2's information holds true, AMD will prioritize its console-bound mid-range GPU over its flagship offering for the initial launch.
Nvidia's upcoming GPU releases also appear to be affected, with Kepler_L2 directly contradicting other leakers like Moore's Law Is Dead, who suggested an RTX 6090 might launch sooner. Kepler_L2 stated that Moore's Law Is Dead is incorrect on this matter.
There is also a possibility that Nvidia might not release "Super" variants of its current GPU lineup. Reports have indicated that these refreshed models have been canceled. The ongoing memory crisis, which was thought to be a driving factor behind Super cards primarily offering enhanced memory configurations, has made their launch increasingly unlikely.
Given the current state of the PC hardware market, the prospect of a limited GPU release schedule for next year may not come as a surprise to many. The industry appears to be bracing for a more substantial influx of new hardware in 2028.
