Rockstar Games has shared a wealth of new details regarding Grand Theft Auto 6, following an extensive gameplay reveal. The upcoming title will feature a dual-protagonist structure, with players controlling a Bonnie and Clyde-inspired duo, Lucia and Jason. While they begin the game in a romantic relationship, this dynamic is not fixed and can be shaped by player choices throughout the story.

Evolving Protagonist Dynamics and Gameplay Features

Players will have the ability to influence the relationship between Lucia and Jason. Actions such as ignoring communication attempts can strain their bond, while participating in shared activities can strengthen it. These choices will affect their interactions and character development but will not fundamentally alter their mandatory partnership. The game allows for near-instantaneous character swapping between the two protagonists, even mid-action like skydiving, and players can summon their partner for assistance. Canine companions can also be interacted with, including petting and feeding them.

Safe houses have been expanded from previous titles, allowing other characters to visit and new activities such as shaving or storing vehicles. The game also introduces a life-simulation element with eating and exercise. Consuming food can provide health boosts, but overeating may lead to weight gain, while working out can enhance musculature. These activities can be undertaken individually or together.

A Living, Breathing Open World

Grand Theft Auto 6 will offer a multitude of distractions and interactive elements. Players can engage with social media on their in-game phones, watch television, listen to the radio, and participate in leisure activities like playing pool, kayaking, scuba diving, and mini-golf. The world will also feature a dynamic NPC interaction system, with characters reacting to player behavior such as loitering or aggressive speech. Random events will occur, prompting NPC interactions or initiating spontaneous conflicts.

The game's map is reportedly twice the size of Grand Theft Auto 5's and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's, promising a significantly larger explorable area. A six-star Wanted level returns, presenting a formidable challenge that may necessitate altering appearance, navigating dense urban environments, or using high-speed vehicles to evade law enforcement. Police responses will also vary depending on whether the player commits crimes solo or with their partner, with options to direct their partner to create diversions.

Deeper Systems and Societal Satire

Grand Theft Auto 6 introduces an honor system, influenced by both positive actions, such as littering correctly, and negative deeds, like excessive violence. Player choices are designed to have noticeable impacts on the narrative. Vehicle theft mechanics have been updated, with some cars featuring electronic locks requiring specialized tools for access. The game also allows for non-lethal takedowns, enabling players to incapacitate enemies by wounding them or disarming them, rather than always resorting to lethal force.

While the game will continue Rockstar's tradition of broad societal commentary, it aims to avoid overly specific or timely political satire, opting instead for satire that is less likely to become dated due to the game's extended development cycle. This approach ensures the game's commentary remains relevant without being tied to ephemeral cultural moments.
