New details concerning Grand Theft Auto 6 have surfaced, offering a clearer picture of the game's vast world, dynamic systems, and narrative setup. A recent issue of Game Informer has detailed several key aspects, including the unprecedented scale of the map, a sophisticated weather system, and insights into the dual protagonists, Jason and Lucia.
The game's map, set in the state of Leonida, is confirmed to be the largest Rockstar has ever created, reportedly twice the size of Grand Theft Auto 5's map. This expansive world is divided into six primary regions: Vice City, Leonida Quays, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park. Vice City, based on Miami, is expected to be a central location, while Grassrivers will serve as the game's rendition of the Everglades. Port Gellhorn will feature smaller towns, Ambrosia will focus on industrial areas with potential for conflict, and Mount Kalaga will include off-road opportunities alongside more affluent locales.
Rockstar appears to be pushing the boundaries of environmental simulation with a dynamic and localized weather system. Unlike previous titles where weather was more generalized, GTA 6's weather will be concurrent and specific, meaning players might witness thunderstorms in one area while another remains sunny. The system is designed to reflect Florida's often turbulent climate, with effects like dynamic rainbows appearing under the right storm conditions, and clear evidence of recent rain such as puddles and wet pavements. Wind physics have also been overhauled, affecting clothing, hair, and environmental elements like water ripples. The game will also feature dynamic hurricanes, though their specific gameplay implications are yet to be fully detailed, potential impacts on the environment and traversal are suggested.
Narratively, players are expected to begin the game as Jason, with Lucia being incarcerated at the outset. Their story reportedly kicks off when Lucia is released from prison, and both characters embark on a criminal path seeking wealth. Their initial plan for a simple score is expected to lead them into a larger, unfolding mystery across Leonida.
Beyond the core mechanics and narrative, GTA 6 will feature an extensive ecosystem with over 170 species of wildlife, including numerous birds, land mammals, fish, and reptiles. Specific animals mentioned include manatees, flamingos, alligators, and even non-native monkeys. Animal fur will react realistically to environmental conditions like rain and dirt. The game also boasts its most diverse cast of non-player characters (NPCs) to date, with varied body types and appearances influenced by their specific locations within Leonida, affecting their clothing, tattoos, and hairstyles.
Player activities will expand significantly, with many showcased in trailers or detailed in companion guides. These range from extreme sports like base jumping and airboating to more relaxed pursuits such as billiards, working out, kayaking, and mini-golfing. A new Rideshare app, called RydeMe, is also being introduced, allowing players to interact with NPCs during travel, expanding on mechanics seen in previous GTA titles.
