New gameplay details for Grand Theft Auto 6 have emerged from a preview published in the British magazine Dazed. The information offers insight into the game's dual protagonists, Lucia and Jason, and how their relationship will function within the world.

Players will have the ability to control either Jason or Lucia individually or as a pair. Seamless character switching will be possible, even when both characters are together. A car ride to a mission, for example, could see players switch between Jason driving and Lucia browsing social media feeds. This functionality will extend into gameplay, allowing players to switch between driving and shooting during high-intensity sequences.

The dynamic between Jason and Lucia is central to Grand Theft Auto 6, with their relationship evolving based on player actions and in-game events. As a couple, they will engage in shared activities like visiting the beach or riding jet skis, providing opportunities for player expression.

Rockstar appears to be placing a significant emphasis on player choice and consequence, aiming for a more reactive world than seen in previous titles. This extends to a morality system that reportedly surpasses the honor system found in Red Dead Redemption 2. The world and its inhabitants are said to react differently to the player depending on their actions, such as openly carrying a rifle.

Immersion and grounded systems are a key focus, including the return of San Andreas' body weight mechanics. Players will see visible effects from their characters' diets and exercise routines, with regular weightlifting also impacting their physique. Rob Nelson, Rockstar North's head of development, stated that the studio aims to "enable as much self-expression as possible, without losing the essence of the characters."

The development team conducted research in Miami, interacting with locals to inform the creation of the game's world and its inhabitants. This focus on authenticity is intended to enhance the player's experience. However, the preview also touches upon recent controversies, including accusations of union-busting against Rockstar Games by the UK trade union IWGB, following the dismissal of dozens of staffers. The studio's parent company, Take-Two, stated the employees were terminated for "gross misconduct," while the union argued the firings were linked to trade union activity. The Rockstar Game Workers Union (RGWU) has been seeking recognition from the studio.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for release on November 19th for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
