Grand Theft Auto 6 will introduce a vehicle refueling mechanic, a feature that Rockstar Games' co-studio head Rob Nelson stated takes roughly 10 seconds to complete. This addition is part of the studio's ongoing effort to increase the simulation depth in its titles.
The refueling system will be available at gas stations, which also serve as repair shops. The stations will accommodate both gasoline-powered vehicles and electric cars, offering recharging options. During an extended preview of the game, which was overseen by Nelson, the refueling process was demonstrated. TGG, a YouTuber who attended the preview, noted that the refuelling cutscene lasts around 10 seconds.
Nelson commented on the observed refuelling time, stating, "Hey, that's pretty fast for a fill up. You can't complain about that." He also acknowledged potential player reception, inquiring, "We'll see what people say," and "Do you think people are going to like it?"
While some Grand Theft Auto players have expressed concerns that the refuelling mechanic could disrupt the series' characteristic driving and action gameplay, TGG suggests that fuel management is unlikely to become a significant issue unless players are inattentive. This sentiment echoes past player reactions to simulation-heavy elements in Rockstar's previous titles, such as Red Dead Redemption 2, where aspects like character movement and inventory management faced similar scrutiny.
