Initial speculation that Grand Theft Auto 6 might be playable on PC via cloud streaming on its launch day has been definitively put to rest. Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball has clarified that the highly anticipated title will not be accessible on PC through Xbox Cloud Gaming at launch.
Reports surfaced on October 6 suggesting that Xbox had secured exclusive rights to stream Grand Theft Auto 6 via Xbox Cloud Gaming. This would have potentially allowed PC players, using Windows 10 version 20H2 or later, to access the game by subscribing to Game Pass Ultimate, provided they had a stable internet connection.
However, Ball addressed the misinformation directly on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "While the excitement for GTA 6 and Xbox is great to see, it has also led to some misreporting. We are looking forward to launching GTA 6 on Xbox November 19, though the game will not be streaming exclusively or to PC."
The clarification confirms that PC players will have to wait for a native PC version of Grand Theft Auto 6, the release date for which has not yet been announced. This aligns with a prevailing industry perspective that developing large-scale games within the constraints of consoles first allows for a more stable foundation before expanding to the more unpredictable PC platform. This approach also helps prevent issues such as unauthorized modifications that have been prevalent in previous Grand Theft Auto titles.
While some players expressed hope that the Xbox Cloud Gaming announcement might still leave room for ambiguity, Ball's statement appears to be clear: "will not be streaming to PC" indicates that the wait for Grand Theft Auto 6 on PC will continue beyond the console launch date.
