A modder has successfully integrated the core gameplay mechanics of Sega's iconic arcade racer, Crazy Taxi, into Grand Theft Auto V. The mod, aptly named the "Crazy Taxi Mod," populates Los Santos with a new type of mission that tasks players with picking up and dropping off passengers within a strict time limit.
Players can initiate a Crazy Taxi mission by approaching a yellow circle marker in the game world and pressing the designated key. This action triggers the selection of a yellow taxi, though the modder notes that due to game physics, these vehicles often immediately drive off the selection screen or even explode shortly after spawning. This necessitates a quick decision when choosing a taxi, as the mod teleports the player into the selected vehicle regardless of its position.
Once behind the wheel, the objective mirrors that of the original Crazy Taxi: transport fares as quickly as possible to extend the rapidly depleting timer. The modder's experience, however, is frequently interrupted by the chaotic nature of Los Santos, with potential passengers sometimes being deterred by ongoing gang activity, or worse, becoming casualties of the city's ambient violence before they can even board the taxi.
The Crazy Taxi franchise itself is slated for a revival, with a new game announced that reportedly includes generative AI elements, and a film adaptation also in development. This mod offers a fan-made alternative for players looking to experience the frenetic driving gameplay in a familiar, albeit more volatile, setting.
