Game Informer's extensive coverage of Grand Theft Auto VI has revealed a wealth of new information about Rockstar's highly anticipated title, detailing ambitious weather systems, a populated world teeming with wildlife and NPCs, and the sheer scope of the game's map.
Dynamic Weather and a Dense World
Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6 will feature dynamic hurricanes, a feature long speculated by fans. These will manifest with intense weather effects including heavy clouds, strong winds, dense atmospherics, and significant rainfall, leaving the environment visibly saturated. The studio has re-engineered its weather system to allow for localized, persistent, and dynamic conditions, meaning players can experience sunshine in one area while a storm rages in the distance. The game will also incorporate realistic elements such as rainbows and puddles, which can indicate recent rainfall. Wind effects will be visible, influencing water surfaces, character hair, and the movement of debris across the landscape.
Leonida's Expansive Map
The map of GTA 6, set in a fictionalized version of Florida called Leonida, is twice the size of GTA 5's map, with a strong emphasis on density. Co-studio head Aaron Garbut stated that Rockstar has meticulously detailed every aspect of the world, from rooftops and alleys to interiors, resulting in a more realistic and cohesive environment. The map is divided into six distinct regions: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park. Ambrosia, for instance, is depicted as a rural area with factories and refineries, potentially controlled by a biker gang distinct from previously featured factions like the Lost MC.
The game's narrative is designed to guide players across this vast world, showcasing the contrasts between affluent and impoverished areas. A fast travel system will be available, allowing players to use ride-sharing services. Unlike previous iterations, these rides can be shared with other passengers, leading to unique conversations. Players also have the option to engage with the in-game social media parody, Snapmatic, for activities like "doomscrolling," though they cannot post themselves to avoid attracting attention.
Diverse Wildlife and Activities
GTA 6 will feature an impressive array of over 170 animal species, including more than 60 types of birds, over 30 land mammals, and various aquatic life. These animals will inhabit different biomes within Leonida, from urban and rural settings to wetlands. Rockstar vice president of dynamic art, Michael Kane, highlighted the team's dedication to accurately researching and realistically portraying these creatures, complete with supporting animations. Aquatic animals, such as different shark species, jellyfish, whales, turtles, and rays, will exhibit distinct behaviors and can be encountered during scuba diving activities. Hunting mechanics are also suggested to return, with screenshots showing characters equipped for the activity, potentially offering more depth than in previous titles. Rare animal variants are confirmed to exist, along with an animal tracking system similar to that seen in Red Dead Redemption 2.
A wide range of side activities will be available, including base jumping, billiards, gym workouts, kayaking, mini-golf, scuba diving, various forms of racing, zoo visits, air boating, and jet skiing.
Gameplay and Narrative Choices
Robberies are a central gameplay element, offering players multiple approaches, including solo or duo operations, and loud or stealthy tactics. The consequences of these choices will influence the police response. If either protagonist, Jason or Lucia, is overwhelmed by law enforcement, it results in a game over. Carjacking has also been enhanced with increased variety and risk; higher-end vehicles may be equipped with trackers or security systems, requiring specialized tools and potentially leading to further complications. An app called WAiNK will allow players to assess a car's resale value and security before attempting to steal it, with stolen vehicles needing to be taken to a fence.
The narrative will be shaped by player choices, impacting not only the relationship between Jason and Lucia but also the overall story, encouraging multiple playthroughs to explore different threads. The protagonists' relationship itself can evolve based on player actions, such as initiating dates or demonstrating chivalry.
Character and World Detail
Rockstar aims to exceed player expectations by dialing up every aspect of the game. NPCs will exhibit a wide variety of physical characteristics, including variations in height, weight, skin tone, and even details like tanning and moles. Clothing options will be extensive, with NPCs' attire reflecting their location and social standing, featuring dirtier or more weathered garments in impoverished areas and culturally significant items like specific shoe brands or watches.
"Everything is dialed up – detail, scope, breadth, scale, interaction and density," stated Garbut. "I don't think we have ever created anything close to this before."
