Rockstar Games is employing an unconventional marketing strategy for Grand Theft Auto VI, with an "Extended Look" at the highly anticipated title set to premiere exclusively on Netflix for six hours before its wider release. This move has drawn some criticism, with observers suggesting Rockstar is effectively paywalling initial gameplay reveals.
A Deeper Dive
Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar's parent company Take-Two, elaborated on the decision in a recent interview, stating that the Netflix exclusive aims to offer fans a more in-depth look at Grand Theft Auto VI compared to a standard trailer. This extended showcase will arrive more than a year after the second official trailer for the game was released. "Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look" is scheduled to stream on Netflix on Thursday, August 27, at 12 p.m. Pacific Time / 3 p.m. Eastern Time / 8 p.m. UK time. It will then be available on Rockstar's YouTube channel six hours later, at 6 p.m. Pacific Time / 9 p.m. Eastern Time on August 27, or 2 a.m. UK time on August 28.
Zelnick suggested that Rockstar views the Netflix platform as an ideal venue for this special presentation. "I think Rockstar felt that a Netflix release would be a great way to show off the extended trailer," he told IGN. "Six hours later it will be available on Rockstar's [YouTube] channel and I think ultimately on many other outlets," he continued. "And I think this is an example of Rockstar trying new things and marketing the title and I hope there's much more to come."
While Zelnick remained tight-lipped about the exact content and duration of the extended look, he hinted that it will be more substantial than a typical gameplay reveal. "As you'd imagine, I'm only going to say great things about Netflix," he remarked when asked if a Netflix subscription is warranted for the reveal. "If you're not a Netflix subscriber, you definitely should be one. And as for the trailer itself, it's coming soon enough that I'll let you arrive at your own conclusion. I'm sure you're going to watch it because everyone is."
Strategic Reach
The partnership with Netflix is expected to expose Grand Theft Auto VI to a vast audience, potentially reaching millions of subscribers who may not typically follow video game news. This broad exposure is a significant draw for Rockstar. The presentation is also anticipated to integrate seamlessly with the streaming platform, potentially resembling an episode of a Netflix show and aiming to capture viewer interest.
The interview also touched upon other aspects of Grand Theft Auto VI, including discussions on pricing, the absence of physical disc releases, and Zelnick's thoughts on the future of game streaming.
