Physical editions of Grand Theft Auto VI will not include a game disc, Rockstar Games confirmed this week. Instead, boxed copies sold at launch will contain a download code.
The decision was detailed in a press release from parent company Take-Two, stating that the physical version, "containing a download code inside the box, will be available starting November 12, 2026 to support pre-loading." The game is officially set to release on November 19, 2026. This means consumers can purchase a physical copy from retailers like Walmart or GameStop and immediately begin pre-loading the title.
This approach to physical distribution deviates from traditional practices, where boxed copies typically include a disc. Players who desire an actual disc for Grand Theft Auto VI will reportedly have to wait and purchase it separately. With the base version of GTA VI launching at $80 and an Ultimate Edition priced at $100, some fans may face the prospect of spending up to $160 to own both the physical code and a future disc release.
Rockstar Games' choice to distribute only download codes is seen as a measure to prevent leaks. The studio experienced a significant security breach in the past, which resulted in the premature release of in-development footage. The code-in-a-box strategy aims to mitigate the risk of games being obtained by fans before their official launch date, a common issue with the release of highly anticipated titles.
The move also appears to contrast with earlier statements from Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick. When questioned about rumors suggesting a delayed release of physical GTA VI copies until 2027 to avoid leaks, Zelnick had previously stated that such a plan was not in place. The current distribution method, while potentially disappointing for collectors seeking physical media, could also reduce manufacturing and shipping costs for the publisher.
