Grand Theft Auto VI will bring back a detailed character appearance system last seen in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, according to developers at Rockstar Games. The upcoming title, set to launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, will feature interactive systems that alter the physical appearance of protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia based on player actions.
In Dazed magazine's Autumn 2026 Issue, Rockstar personnel elaborated on how gameplay will affect the characters' bodies. Consuming excessive food will lead to weight gain, while regular exercise will result in muscle development. Insufficient sleep will also be reflected in their skin condition. The developers emphasized that virtually any action taken within the game world of Leonida will influence both the environment and the protagonists' physical forms.
This mechanic directly mirrors a system present in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. In that earlier title, protagonist Carl "CJ" Johnson's weight, stamina, and even his ability to perform certain actions were tied to his diet and exercise habits. If CJ became overweight due to poor choices, it could negatively impact his in-game capabilities. While it remains unclear if GTA VI will impose similar mission restrictions on a heavier or fatigued Jason and Lucia, their health and well-being appear poised to be a significant factor in how they are presented and function within the game.
Details surrounding GTA VI have been circulating, exacerbated by recent leaks. Rockstar Games is gradually revealing more information about the highly anticipated release. The developers also touched on the increased believability of the characters and the experience of switching between the dual protagonists, Jason and Lucia.
