Grasshopper Manufacture, the studio behind the No More Heroes series, has once again become an independent developer following its split with NetEase Games. The Chinese internet conglomerate had acquired the studio in 2021. CEO Goichi “SUDA51” Suda described the decision to go indie as a move that will allow the studio greater creative freedom to "deliver titles in an even wider variety of styles."
This transition follows the release of Romeo Is a Dead Man earlier this year, an arcade action-adventure game developed by Grasshopper Manufacture. Suda noted that the title received positive critical reception but did not comment on its commercial performance. In a September 30 announcement, Suda stated that the studio's reflection on its future led to a "strong desire to deliver titles in an even wider variety of styles to video game lovers everywhere." He confirmed that this decision was made after extensive discussions and with the cooperation of NetEase Games.
Grasshopper Manufacture expressed its continued appreciation for the relationship with NetEase and anticipates potential future collaborations. The studio has gained valuable experience in self-publishing, which Suda believes provides a broad range of options for future game releases. Regardless of the publishing model, Grasshopper Manufacture remains committed to its signature "NO GAME NO LIFE" gaming experience, promising unique titles with its distinct style and enhanced quality.
NetEase has been systematically withdrawing from investments in the gaming industry after a period of significant expansion. This pullback includes previously funded ventures such as Nagoshi Studios' debut game, Gang of Dragon, and GPTRACK50, whose upcoming roguelike Stupid Never Dies is now being self-published.
