The 1984 cult horror-comedy Gremlins is experiencing a resurgence in popularity, achieving significant streaming success on HBO Max and reaffirming its status as a beloved fan favorite.
Directed by Joe Dante, the film masterfully blends Christmas fantasy, creature-feature horror, and dark comedy. Its unique tone, characterized by practical effects, unsettling monsters, and absurdity, was a hallmark of 1980s filmmaking. Gremlins currently ranks third among the top movies on HBO Max, according to data from FlixPatrol.
The film centers on Billy Peltzer, who receives a mysterious creature known as a Mogwai for Christmas. Named Gizmo, the Mogwai comes with strict rules: it must be kept away from bright light, must not get wet, and must never be fed after midnight. When these conditions are inevitably broken, Billy's hometown of Kingston Falls descends into chaos as the Mogwai spawns a multitude of destructive, mischievous gremlins, transforming the holiday season into a nightmarish ordeal.
The original film's success led to a sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, released in 1990. This follow-up transported the chaos to a high-tech Manhattan skyscraper, escalating the mayhem to new heights. Both Gremlins and its sequel are available for streaming on HBO Max.
The franchise has also expanded into television with Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, a 2023 animated prequel series. This series explores Gizmo's origins and the early adventures of Sam Wing in 1920s Shanghai, running for two seasons and delving deeper into the creatures' mythology. It is also streaming on HBO Max.
A third live-action Gremlins film is in development, with Warner Bros. recently shifting its release date to October 6, 2028. Chris Columbus, who penned the original screenplay, is set to direct. While plot details and casting remain under wraps, a brief teaser offered a glimpse of Gizmo. The original film's premise, featuring Billy receiving the creature as a gift, remains a key visual for the enduring franchise.
